The X342n Multifunction Laser Printer is Lexmark’s cheapest multifunction unit, at $399. It prints, copies, and faxesonly black ink documents. if you don’t need the fax but want color printing capability, the X500n provides this for $100 more.
Lexmark manages to blend the lines of the printer and scanner better than some in the multifunction market, but mainly because the laser print engine is a substantial device in its own right. It’s a two man lift and with the four, colour toner cartridges mounted vertically at the front, sits quite high off the desk.
A single function color inkjet, the HP Officejet Pro K5400 ably fills a small niche in the small and medium size office arenas. Low cost, fast prints, and high quality text make this a great printer for offices on a budget who don’t have high volume printing needs but want the ability to print color graphics and photos.
The spec sheet claims that this thing will print up to 17ppm in black (letter) and 3ppm in color with a maximum effective resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi. Text quality of the X342n was decent for a low end printer, but it was not quite as sharp and crisp as some mid range laser printers, such as the HP Color Laserjet 3600n. Scans were not great, displaying very undersaturated colors.
Network Interface is a standard ethernet network interface that allows for sharing the printer on your home or office network.
The Lexmark C500n is a fast color laser printer fit for a multiuser environment with high volume printing needs. The competition offers more features, but slower printing or lower quality prints.
Long on design and short on features, the Samsung SCX 4500 multifunction laser printer is best suited for light home or office use. Unless you’re willing to pay for a showcase printer (two words we’ve never seen next to one another), your money will buy you more features and faster task speeds elsewhere.
